Head Men's Basketball Coach & Assistant Athletic Director

SUMMARY: Martin Luther College (MLC) is seeking a Head Men’s Basketball Coach and an Assistant Athletic Director to support its NCAA Division III programs. This position promotes excellence in competition while contributing to the formation of student-athletes for lives of Christian service. Summary of Positon: Serving as both coach and administrator, this position provides leadership for the men’s basketball program and assists in the overall operations of the athletics department. The individual works closely with the Athletic Director to support a positive student-athlete experience and ensure alignment with the mission and the Athletic Department Philosophy. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Men’s Basketball Program - Lead and develop the men’s basketball program, fostering a competitive Christ-centered environment and guiding student-athletes as they grow into leaders for public ministry. Plan and conduct practices, training, and competition preparation. - Teach and reinforce fundamental and advanced basketball skills. - Prepare game strategy, scouting reports, and in-game adjustments. - Mentor student-athletes in their athletic, academic, and personal development. - Support recruitment and retention of student-athletes aligned with MLC’s mission. - Coordinate team travel, scheduling, and game logistics in collaboration with athletic staff. - Manage the men’s basketball program budget. - Supervise assistant coaches and student managers, supporting their development. - Ensure compliance with NCAA Division III, UMAC, and institutional policies. - Travel with the basketball team to games and events. Athletics Administration: - Supports the daily operations of Athletics, ensuring alignment with the Athletic Department Philosophy. - Coordinates game-day operations, event management, and facility scheduling. - Assists with planning and logistics for tournaments and sports camps. - Support budget oversight, compliance processes, and departmental administration. - Supervises student workers and schedules staffing for athletic events and facilities. - Leads or supports student-athlete engagement initiatives, including SAAC and special events. QUALIFICATIONS: *Required:* - An active member of the WELS or church body in fellowship with the WELS. - A deep commitment to the mission and core values of WELS and MLC, and an ability to apply that commitment in the performance of daily responsibilities on and off campus. - Bachelor’s degree in education or pre-seminary studies. - Coaching or playing experience at the high school or collegiate level. - Willingness to enroll in the Teaching Ministry Certification Program. *Preferred:* - Master’s degree in applicable field, or willingness to pursue. Knowledge of and support for the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs offered. - Supervisory and administrative experience. - Experience in recruiting and developing student-athletes. Proficiency with Google programs and Microsoft Office Suite, or a willingness to gain skills. Operate fitness center and training hall equipment, mounting and dismounting. - Organizes athletic-related events involving lifting and moving materials, equipment, tables, tents, etc. - Mobility across campus, athletic facilities, and fields; present for long or multi-day events. Director of Basketball Operations

Job Summary: This position coordinates the daily operations for the University’s basketball program. The incumbent assists with scheduling regular season games, coordinates and schedules events and coordinates film exchange with other institutions. This position reports to the Head Basketball Coach. Job Description: Examples of Work Performed: - Ensures compliance with NCAA and SEC rules and regulations. - Keeps coaches informed of rules and regulations. - Communicates with other institutions regarding delivery and receipt of game film. - Utilizes video/audio equipment to videotape games of opponents. - Coordinates team travel, including transportation arrangements, lodging, and meals. - Ensures luggage and equipment meets federal aviation requirements. - Coordinates practice times at sites when traveling. - Schedules practice and shoot around times and oversees the preparation of the practice floor. - Assists with the development of regular season game schedule including dates and times. - Coordinates and organizes summer camps and clinics and promotes sports camps as appropriate. - Assists with budget development and monitors expenditures. - Meets with head coach on a regular basis. - Hires, supervises, and monitors the performance of student managers - Represents the basketball program at functions and events as necessary. - Ensures all assigned tasks are in compliance with department, University, Southeastern Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. - Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required. Assistant Coach

Two positions will be hired from this posting. General Function: The Assistant Coach is responsible for specifically designated aspects of the sport, exercises independent judgment in providing technical expertise in the fundamentals of the sport, teaching student-athletes basic and advanced skills, and assisting the Head Athletic Coach in management of the team through recruiting, program development, fund-raising, promotional activities, and related assigned responsibilities. The Assistant Coach guides and mentors student-athletes throughout the academic year. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Enables the achievement of a quality, competitive sports program and supports the educational goals of individual student-athletes by demonstrating a coaching philosophy which encourages those goals and promotes an environment conducive to both. 2. Assumes responsibility for a particular aspect of the sport as assigned by the Head Coach, planning short and long terms objectives under the leadership of the head coach, demonstrating technical expertise in the basics of the sport, and teaching the fundamentals and advanced level skills and game strategies to student-athletes, recruiting players including determining which schools to visit and which athletes to recruit, recommending the selection of team members, supervising practice sessions, scouting future opponents, providing expert advice to the head coach and team members, providing guidance or mentoring to student athletes throughout the academic year, coordinating with the Academic Achievement Center, and monitoring academic progress of participating student-athletes. 3. Protects the integrity of the sport coached and the reputation of the intercollegiate athletics program of the University by complying with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations as well as applicable conference rules and University policies regarding recruiting activities, student-athlete eligibility determination, scholarships and financial aid programs, scheduled practice sessions, and related covered activities. 4. Supervises and assigns responsibilities to team managers and graduate assistants and assigns day-to-day team responsibilities on road trips. 5. Reduces the likelihood of sports-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled contests by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and proper prevention methods, supervising appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warm ups, and referring injured student-athletes to qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers. 6. Supports established athletic fund-raising goals by actively participating in fund-raising events and promotional activities for intercollegiate athletics, assists in the formulation of team and department fundraising activities, and leads fundraising activities as directed by the Head Coach. 7. Promotes a positive image of the intercollegiate athletics program and the University through participation in community and professional organizations, representing the University at professional meetings as required, maintaining credible relations with various news media, serving in a leadership role and promoting participation in community service activities by student athletes, and serving as a guest speaker at public evens on behalf of the University. 8. Participates as a member of the University community by teaching appropriate courses or class sessions in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, as required. 9. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Head Coach. 10. Contributes to the overall success of the University's intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head Coach. Minimum Acceptable Qualifications: - Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required. - Experience : At least two years of experience in coaching at the intercollegiate level is required, however, extensive player experience at the collegiate level can be substituted for the coaching experience. Any coaching experience in a NCAA Division I level program is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, eligibility and related functions is required. - Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills are required. Management and organizational skills are required.
